About this work
The virtuous woman sells clothes she made herself to a merchant. In the background a ship is being unloaded at the quay. The print is based on Proverbs 31:14: 'Like a merchant ship she goes to distant lands, so she brings from afar what she needs' and Proverbs 31:24: 'She makes clothing and belts, and delivers them to merchants'. The image bears a German inscription and is part of a six-part print series praising the activities of the virtuous housewife.
