About this work

A man in black clothing grabs the stick with which a woman struck him. The man is Ishikawa Goemon, played by actor Ichikawa Danjûrô VII (1791-1859). The woman, actor Iwai Shijaku (1804-1845), plays the role of a courtesan named Segawa, who is actually Oritsu and the wife of Ishikawa Goemon. This scene comes from the play Masago no gohiiki, performed at the Kawarazaki theater in 1830. Accompanied by three poems.
