About this work

A woman falls to the ground during a fight with a man holding a bow. The man is actor Sawamura Gennosuke II (1802-53) and the woman is actor Segawa Kikunojô V (1802-32). This may depict the kabuki play Matsuochikara Tomoe no fujinami, performed in 1831 at the Kawarazaki theater in Edo. Left part of a diptych, possibly the middle leaf of a triptych. With three poems.
