About this work
In an interior, Maria van Utrecht, widow of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, kneels at the feet of the prince and begs Maurice for mercy for her son Reinier van Oldenbarnevelt, one of the conspirators sentenced to death, March 1623. Within a frame with pilasters and allegorical medallions. Left: the felling of the spear of liberty; right: the shepherd's dog is devoured by the wolf.
