About this work

A city view with the Dom Church in Utrecht is central in a frame with three scholars engaged in their work. A botanist studies a plant and a surgeon with a mortar and pestle examines the contents of a bottle. A scholar with a bellows heats the contents of an ampoule on a stove. The city view is framed by scrolling foliage and putti with objects: an anatomical model and a tray with medical instruments. On top of the frame, a round shield with the motto of the University of Utrecht.
