About this work
After the battle against the Midianites, the Israelites purify all fire-resistant objects in the fire. What has been passed through the fire and everything that is not fire-resistant is purified with water. Moses gives the order to do this in the center. In the center below a reference to the biblical text in Num. 31:23. The representation is enclosed in an ornamental frame with a mask, eagle, shell, scrollwork, garlands, and leafy tendrils.
