About this work

Ferryman Tonbei is angry at his daughter Ofune, who is kneeling before him, because she is in love with the nobleman Nitta Yoshimine. Tonbei wanted to have Yoshimine arrested in exchange for a large reward, but Ofune helped him escape. When Tonbei thrusts his sword upward through the floor, assuming he is killing Yoshimine, he discovers he has killed his own daughter Ofune.
