About this work

A 'maiden tree' in which marriageable ladies sit. The men beat against the trunk of the tree with clubs, so that the women will fall out like ripe plums. Emblem no. 23 in Emblemata Saecularia, 1596, and no. 44 in the second edition of 1611.
