About this work
Paul is bitten by a snake while attempting to throw a bundle of wood onto a fire. He is surrounded by a large group of people—prisoners who, like him, suffered shipwreck on their way to Rome at Malta (the ship is visible on the shore in the background). Below the image, a biblical text from Acts 27.
