About this work
Diana Mantuana made her Rome debut with this spectacular print. She based it on a fresco by Giulio Romano in her native Mantua. By dedicating the ambitious engraving to the Mantuan nobleman Claudio Gonzaga, she associated herself with this important patron and senior figure at the papal court in Rome. A strategic move, as in this way Mantuana's work gained authority.
