About this work

Portrait of Pieter Adriaansz. van der Werff, burgomaster of Leiden at the time of the Relief of Leiden. The portrait is on a monument flanked by putti; one holds a scroll, the other breaks a yoke and stands beside a spear of liberty. Above, the all-seeing eye of God. Below, an allegorical representation with the city maiden of Leiden.
