About this work

Prince Willem V of Orange-Nassau is offered the stadtholdership by the personified Union (the United Netherlands), because he came of age in 1766. Wisdom places a wreath on Willem V's head. Freedom of religion, Justice and Prudence stand on the left and bring Peace and Abundance and cause Trade and Arts to flourish. The personifications of Trade and Art stand to the right of the throne with palette and brushes and books under the arm. On the right Virtue destroys Self-interest and Flattery with a club. In the middle the Dutch lion with sword, bundle of arrows and shield. At the bottom in the margin there is an explanation of the representation in Dutch.
