About this work
Allegory on the Birth of William V, Prince of Orange, 8 March 1748. In the centre the personification of Eternal Government with the child in her arms, surrounded by all kinds of allegorical figures, gods and goddesses, on the left the Dutch Maiden. On the right the Orange tree and the English rose grow intertwined in a vase. In the sky Mercury and Juno in her chariot drawn by peacocks at the signs of the zodiac. In the foreground on the left the nymph of the Hofvijver, in the background the stadtholder's quarters in The Hague. On the sheet below the plate an explanation of the subject in two columns.
