About this work
Allegory on the birth of Willem V, Prince of Orange, 8 March 1748. Centrally the personification Eternal Governance with the child in her arms, surrounded by various allegorical figures, gods and goddesses, on the left the Dutch Maiden. On the right, intertwined in a vase, the Orange tree and the English rose grow. In the sky Mercury and Juno in her chariot drawn by peacocks at the signs of the zodiac. In the foreground on the left the nymph of the Hofvijver, in the background the stadtholder's quarter in The Hague. On the sheet below the plate an explanation of the representation in two columns.
