About this work
Minerva visits women spinning wool and weaving cloth. She holds a weaving pattern in her hand and points to women examining the cloth. Above the loom a spider's web, as a reference to Arachne who was turned into a spider by her. In the background a view of the sea. The scene is set in an exuberantly decorated cartouche crowned by Father Time, the personification of Navigation (with a miniature sailing ship) and Mercury. At the bottom a four-line poem in French.
