About this work
Sheet with two depictions of Jewish customs around the celebration of Simchat Torah or Rejoicing of the Law. Top: In the Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam the ark in which the scrolls are kept is open. On the left side of the ark sits a so-called bridegroom of the Law with the scroll Bereshit (Genesis) and on the right side a bridegroom of the Law with the last scroll of the Torah: Devarim (Deuteronomy). Bottom: The bridegrooms of the Law, the readers of the Torah, are accompanied in a procession with torches on the festival of Simchat Torah or Rejoicing of the Law. Below the images an explanation in French.
