About this work

Under a canopy decorated with the monogram of the Dutch East India Company sits Mercury, god of trade, at the city arms of Amsterdam. He is surrounded by money, a treasure chest, compass and a globe. To the left stands blindfolded Justice with a scale in her hand. Next to her sits the personification of the Orient accompanied by the Dutch Lion. River gods with jugs flank on the foreground a view of the harbour of Amsterdam.
