About this work

A hermit sits writing in a book on a pedestal with a portrait medallion of Pythagoras and listens to the personification of Rumor who points to a part of the zodiac in the sky. In front of the hermit lies a sphinx on a pedestal on which Truth is depicted. To the right a satyr points to the scene behind him; a putto bores a hole through the globe which is revealed by an old satyr. In the left background stand two (possibly antique) statues. In the right background a donkey and an owl on a pedestal.
