About this work

A cook serves soup to Muslim galley slaves; he is himself a galley slave. In the center, two of them are sitting by a tub. On the right, a sheep is being skinned, and a dog is eating the scraps. These enslaved men are identifiable as Muslims by their characteristic hairstyle (shaved head except for a tuft of hair), which they were required to wear.
