About this work

The hypocrite, with a devil above his head, buries his treasures in the earth. The believer, with an angel above his head, waits to gather treasures until he is in heaven. Depiction of Matt. 6:19-21: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." Letters next to various elements of the scene correspond to the legend in the margin.
