About this work
Allegory on the ratification of the Peace of Nijmegen on 20 September 1678. In the center, a pillar with Peace, the coats of arms of Spain, France, and the Republic, and portrait medallions of eight sovereigns. To the right in the foreground, the Dutch Maiden, Justice, and Prudence drive away War, Envy, and Greed. To the left, Force drives away Hypocrisy; in the foreground, Painting lies defeated. Mercury steps with the book Credit under his arm towards two female personifications of the VOC and WIC. In the background on the left, Neptune, and on the right, a procession of marching war invalids and other war victims.
