About this work
Allegory on the restoration of the true religion in England with the arrival of the Prince of Orange, 1688. A Roman general, William III, hands a sealed Bible to the English Maiden lying in bed. William III is accompanied by the Dutch Lion; at the foot of the bed, the English lord and burgher kneel. In the sky, the angel of God's vengeance flies with lightning bolts and a trumpet; above, Truth enthrones. In the foreground, two female figures sit on either side of a frieze with the image of Hercules being crowned.
