About this work
Allegory on the restoration of religion in England by William III, 1688-1689. As a Roman hero, Prince William (with an English shield) saves the Maiden of Religion (with seven stars as a halo); behind her hides Moses with the tablets of the law. Hercules chases Deceit, Envy, and other enemies with a club. Around are various personifications pointing to the goodness of the Prince. In the foreground, a verse held up by two angels.
