Mirror of Fire

In the foreground a fire is lit by means of the focal point of a mirror. In the background examples of the use of mirrors to make fire: a child is petrified by a basilisk, a child is pricked by nettles, Archimedes uses a mirror to set a ship on fire. The print has a Latin inscription: 'Flamma volat, micat fugam cape, conflagrat orbis: plena adeo igniuomis omnia funt specvlis'. At the bottom a legend of the scenes which are numbered alphabetically on the image. The print is part of a twelve-print series (III out of XII prints) with the subject twelve mirrors with which man tries to see God.
