About this work
An allegory on Italy. In the center under a tree, the gods Venus (love) and Apollo (the arts). Venus holds the cornucopia in her hand. On her lap, the five crowns of Italy. Apollo with a viola da gamba (music) in his right hand and a stack of books in his left hand (poetry). On the ground, masks, musical instruments, books, and other objects for sport and play. In the background on the left, a triumphant entry; on the right, some musicians and a horse race.
