About this work

The unexpected news from Ireland. King Louis XIV lies ill in bed after the news of the defeat of James II and the Catholic army at the Battle of the Boyne on July 11, 1690. Physicians and courtiers stand around the king's bed; on the left, two Turkish physicians stand ready with an enema syringe to cure the king. To the right of the bed, a group of courtiers, including Father Peters, discuss the news of the alleged death of King William III. On the right, Jacobus II enters with a turban, wooden leg, and crutch with the true news of the course of the battle. On the sheet below the print, an explanation of the numbers 1-13 in two columns.
