About this work

Clearing a path through the ice to the sea, 12 June 1597. Chopping and spading creates a path through the ice over which the boat can be towed to the sea. In the foreground a polar bear is shot. Copies of the original illustrations in the travel report of the voyage of Willem Barendsz and Jacob van Heemskerck in 1596-1597 and the stay on the island of Nova Zembla, No. 21.
