About this work

New Year's print of the carpenters' guild or Saint Joseph's guild in Haarlem, ca. 1600. Joseph working in his carpentry workshop, with the Christ Child and John the Baptist playing on the floor, and Mary on the left. The scene is framed by putti holding the arms of Habsburg and Haarlem, carpenter's attributes, and ornaments. At the bottom, a New Year's greeting in four verses of thirteen lines each, in two columns, signed with the motto 'Love breeds Peace'.
