About this work

The Pope's shop in Rome, ca. 1615. Allegory on oppression by the Catholic Church. On the right the Pope sits with a seven-headed dragon on a leash, with the Whore of Babylon and worldly princes. In the background heresy burnings and executions. At the Pope's feet kneels Emperor Barbarossa. On the left the Dutch Maiden with the Dutch Lion in the Dutch Garden. Pallas stands by a group of Reformed princes including Maurice, the Duke of Brandenburg. In the background the complaining peasants of Jülich and Cleves. In the text Wolfgang William of Palatinate-Neuburg also plays a role. Attached under the image a sheet with 5 columns of text in Dutch.
