About this work

Allegory on the civil strife of 1618. The Dutch Maiden is attacked by a soldier marked on his helmet as Utrecht (a stadtholder) with the names of the Remonstrant cities in Holland on his skirt. His raised hand with a sword is held back by the hand of God from heaven. The maiden sits on the cornerstone of Christ and is simultaneously assailed by Discord, Death, and Fury. In the sea, a triton (Patriot) blows out counter-Remonstrant pamphlets from his horn. With an inscription of five verses of four lines in Dutch.
