About this work

First battle between the fleet of the WIC under Willem Cornelisz. Loos and the Portuguese fleet under Count de la Torre near the island of Itamaracá, off the coast of Brazil, 12 January 1640. A winged scroll in the sky bearing the title and the coats of arms. The legend explains the letters A-E and the numbers 1-6 in Latin. Plate [no. 42] in a series of 55 depictions of the journey to and the stay in Brazil of Count Johan Maurits of Nassau in the years 1636-1644.
