About this work

Allegory on the reign of King William III, possibly in connection with the Peace of Rijswijk concluded on 20 September 1697 between France and the allies. Hercules leads William III to the Temple of Fame. On the right Apollo, Pegasus and the Muses on Parnassus. In the foreground a donkey next to a woman with attributes of despicable pastimes: drinking, making music, gambling and playing and love. With two fleeing satyrs and a woman with snake hair (Discord or Envy).
