About this work

Allegory on the elevation of William IV to stadtholder of the Republic, 1747. The Dutch Maiden seated in the Dutch Garden, the entrance of which is defended by the Dutch Lion against the attacks of the French Rooster (Hulst) and a dragon. The Maiden asks Pallas (stadtholder William IV) to become her protector; her horse is held by a Moorish servant; in the foreground, the runaway horse of Liberty. In the background, the siege of a city. In the legend, the explanation of the numbers 1-8.
