Stadtholdership until 1802

Overview of all stadtholders in the Netherlands, from William of Orange to William V. The stadtholders stand in chronological order on the steps of a large staircase in a palace. At the top William of Orange, who is murdered by Balthasar Gerards. Then Maurice, Frederick Henry, William II with Andries and Cornelis Bicker as representatives of Amsterdam, stadtholder-king William III and William IV. After William IV follow the guardians of William V: Anna of Hanover and Louis Ernest, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. At the bottom William V finally steps off the staircase as the last of the stadtholders onto a stone marked Oranienstein, referring to Oranienstein Castle in Germany to which William departed, after recognizing the Batavian Republic as part of the provisions of the Peace of Amiens, on 27 March 1802. He is assisted by Napoleon and Frederick William III of Prussia. In the inscription an explanation of the subject in six lines.
