About this work

Allegorical image on the occasion of the treaty between the French Republic and Willem V, prince of Orange-Nassau. On a large decorated staircase stand all the stadtholders of Holland; at the top Willem I and at the bottom Willem V. Willem V is escorted down the stairs by Frederik Willem II, king of Prussia and Bonaparte. On the steps of the staircase some important historical events are depicted. In the background a map of the Netherlands and on the left various sailing ships. At the top of the stairs a painting of the Union of the Nobles and the beheading of the counts of Egmond and Horne, and below the image a seven-line caption.
