Discovery of smuggled Jesuits at the Belgian border, 1828

At the border between the Southern Netherlands and France, near Luxembourg, customs officers catch Jesuits trying to enter the country. They are hidden in sacks on a farmer's cart. To the right is a customs office, to the left a laughing cook and kitchen maid look on. In the center, two customs officers examine a trunk full of French reactionary laws. Satire on the expulsion and deportation of the Jesuits across the Belgian borders in October and November 1828, after they had crossed without permission, having fled from France.
