About this work
Patriotic allegory on the attack on Hattem and Elburg by the stadtholder, 4–6 September 1786. The city maidens of Hattem and Elburg are mistreated by Despair, Anger, and Despondency. Prince William V tramples the rights and privileges of the country with drawn sword. However, he is frightened by Divine Wrath, who threatens him with a flaming sword. On the right, the despondent Liberty is comforted and encouraged by Constancy, Courage, and Justice. On the mount below the print, a handwritten explanation of the subject.
