About this work
The Atlas of Gordon

Robert Jacob Gordon (1743-1795) held various high military positions at the Cape. During expeditions into the interior, he kept a diary and recorded in watercolor drawings what he saw – out of personal interest, but also as part of the scientific description of the Cape. His 'atlas' comprises nearly 400 watercolors.
Gordon's watercolors of the Khoi, inhabitants of the coastal area, and the Xhosa far in the interior provide a detailed image of the clothing, weapons, and customs of the indigenous population.
