Evening in the women's quarters

On a spacious courtyard of a palace, four women play a board game. The woman at the back right holds three elongated dice in her hand, ready to throw. The woman to her right sits leaning against a bolster cushion. She is the most important lady. The game being played here is called Chaupar or Pacisi. It is night, but lamps are placed everywhere to illuminate the terrace. In the background, on the city walls, an immense number of lights have been placed. Presumably, the Islamic festival Shab-i-Barat is being celebrated here.
