About this work

Gilded Louis XIII frame with carved ornaments. The outer edge features stylized floral and foliate motifs. The outer edge borders a convex profile with a slightly hollowed back. The carving here consists of acanthus leaves and flowers. Adjacent is a narrow fillet and a carved ribbon with acanthus leaves. The inner edge is decorated with a more stylized foliate motif. The ground around the carving features a rouletted pattern. Originally, the mitred joints were connected with dovetail wedges. The frame has been narrowed at the top and bottom rails for the painting, after which an oak backing was attached. The corner joints of the backing are also connected with dovetail wedges.
