About this work

The context of origin is explained by the extensive rhymed inscription in the two text fields in the frieze of the shield, while the donor is heraldically represented and through another inscription below the central Strasbourg coat of arms: it concerns Christoph Städel (died 1624), who was a member of the Strasbourg council and held the office of Rat des Ammans multiple times from 1598 onwards. As a thank you and in memory of the hospitality he experienced during the Basel shooting festival of 1605...
