About this work

Porcelain plate, painted on the glaze in black and gold. On the flat surface a scene of a group of people around a table and two sitting side by side in an arched niche, above them hang garlands; to the left, through an arch, a landscape is visible. Depiction of Daphnis and Cloë. On the wall a 'spearhead-border'; the rim with four cartouches containing animals in a landscape. On the underside an old label with 'F. Bodenham/ Elmhurst, Hereford/ 53'. Based on an engraving by Benoit Audran (1661-1721), based on a painting by Philippe d'Orléans (1674-1723). European depiction in encre de Chine.
