About this work

Among the attractive materials Chinese carvers worked with was mother-of-pearl. The objects most frequently made in this material were gaming counters, 'currency' for parlour games. The one on view here bears the Reverhorst coat of arms, also found on an armorial tea service commissioned by this family. According to the inscription on this exceptionally large round plaque it was ordered by Cornelis Schippers, who was in Canton in 1733.
