About this work

This underglaze blue vase depicts four groups of scholars in a garden. Each group performs one of the four arts (si yi) of the Chinese literati: playing the zither and chess, mastering calligraphy, and appreciating painting. These four activities embody the ideals of a scholar and reflect the longing for a life of study.
