When the nymph Daphne was pursued by Apollo, who had fallen in love with her, she begged her father and river god Peneus for help. He saved his daughter from her pursuer by turning her into a laurel tree. At the moment Apollo tries to grasp her, Daphne's arms turn into leafy branches.
