About this work
A soldier, full-length, carrying a spear (lance) above his right shoulder, the point angled towards the ground (no. 12), ca. 1600. His hands far apart on the spear. This is the first movement for lowering the spear to pass under an archway. Plate 12 in the instructions for handling the spear: Corte onderwysinghe op de figuerliicke afbeeldinghe, belanghende t'recht ghebruyck, van al t'ghene een Soldaet int handelen vande Spies noodich is.
