About this work

A soldier on guard, full-length, facing right, taking a musket (a specific type of firearm) from his left shoulder with his right hand (no. 34), ca. 1600. In his left hand, besides the butt of the musket, a lit match. This is the same position as the one shown on the second print of the series. Plate 34 in the instructions for handling the musket. Part of the illustrations in: J. de Gheyn, Wapenhandelinghe van Roers Musquetten ende spiessen, Amsterdam, 1608. Military affairs around 1600.
