Cardinal Portocarrero and the Battle of Malplaquet, 1709. A depiction of the battle between the Allies and the French on 11 September 1709 set within an architectural frame with various allegorical figures. In the center, the reclining Cardinal Portocarrero (considered the instigator of the war) looks on; to the right in the foreground, Death is painting a portrait of the cardinal, who died three days after the battle on 14 September 1709. Sheet in the bound collection of plates published under the title: Repraesentatio belli ... Der Spanische Successions-Krieg [ca. 1720].
