About this work
A monument commemorating the folly of the year 1720. On a large wagon drawn by a jester, Fortune scatters South Sea and Mississippi company shares. The wagon is led by Fame toward the poorhouse and madhouse, surrounded by merchants and victims. In the background to the right is the Quincampoix coffee house. At the bottom is the emblem with the Latin motto "Schijn Bedriegt" (Appearance Deceives). The caption below explains the image in French and Dutch. Print in the bound fourth edition (304 B 12) of *Het Groote Tafereel der Dwaasheid* with satirical prints on the Wind Trade or Share Trade of 1720.
