The maker made this sampler and BK-16520-b at the age of twelve. The pattern of the spies of Canaan walking in a line rarely occurs on Dutch embroidery samplers. The foremost man turns away from the bunch of grapes (Christ), the rear one turns towards him (cf. sampler in the Centraal Museum, Utrecht). The crowned Dutch Virgin with the liberty cap is accompanied by the Dutch Lion. In the border of the sampler are embroidered, among others, the coat of arms of Amsterdam and the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil. The snake head refers to Eve, recognizable by her long hair. Second proof (cf. BK-16520-b). The pattern is built symmetrically, but not identical on both halves, so the sampler does not look stiff. It is remarkable that the spies of Canaan walk in a line. The initials are embroidered as cursive capital letters. Right selvage. Double open hem.
